There is a lack of knowledge, be it out of realisation or care, about the processes involved in streaming a video, uploading photos or transferring money to friends. Each of these actions has a very real cost in terms of energy and in the implications of how we deal with the vast amounts of information we produce that is tracked, stored and analysed. Revealing this process in a way that is beneficial to the locals, the visitors and the wider field can encourage a greater awareness of the machinations of data, the amount of information we provide and the implications this has.
This led to the development of an interactive museum that uses and exhibits the processes often concealed whilst responding to a scenario born from the specific context of Stornoway and the Isle of Lewis. This determined a socially responsible strategy that would inform the design of the project. Based on these observations, a complex programmatic strategy was reached that involved the combination of a museum with a research facility into a hybrid typology that seeks to challenge the conventions of both.
